Maybe you'll find your second cruise line of choice -- deals on luxury lines like Azamara and Regent Seven Seas are just a few of the bargains you might find. With dozens of daily activities, numerous lounges for live music and 10 eateries, the variety of choices is dazzling. Everything is changing because of FULL cruise ships. I hate long lines regardless of the cabin category I am in. Add in the congestion at the Port of New Orleans vs. lets say, Miami. Unfortunately, unlike the ‘good ole’ days’ – you no longer get access to the thermal suite when purchasing a service from the spa.

Eventually, you reach the Virgin Gorda Baths which is a maze of volcanic boulders. You will be climbing down narrow ladders, walking through water, and using ropes for balance as you walk over the formations. It’s totally beautiful in there and lots of fun. Once you arrive at your destination, there is a place to get snacks, etc. before you begin the fairly long descent down a hill to the baths. Make SURE you wear shoes with strong grip that can also do water.

The Haven Premium was a bit to much for us on this cruise so we did a Club Balcony Suite on this cruise. Two cruises ago, November 2021, we did the nicest Haven Cabin (The H2 Haven Deluxe Owners Suite) with our two (2) adult children. It was also wonderful to have our kids joining us.

You'll find plenty of young families onboard Norwegian ships, especially during holidays and school breaks. Norwegian cruise ships draw a diverse crowd, though the majority of passengers on ships sailing to the Caribbean and in Alaska and Hawaii hail from North America. You'll find a decent number of people from other English-speaking countries, and smaller numbers from South America and Europe. On European cruises, North Americans still dominate but you'll find more people from the United Kingdom and other European countries. One ship, Norwegian Joy, was designed specifically for the Asian market, and the vast majority of passengers on this ship will be from China.

Balcony cabins are 160+/- square feet, plus an additional 37-square-foot veranda. These staterooms have a small pullout sofa, which can sleep one person though it’s not the comfiest place for sleeping. It’s worth noting that the pullout sofa is quite firm. The balconies are furnished with two chairs and a small table. Aft-facing balconies on decks 8 through 10 are the same size as regular balcony cabins but offer a larger veranda, ranging in size from 71 to 136 square feet.
Norwegian Cruise Line Roll Calls
I will overview this cruise review into parts. Some contexts of our cruising experiences in the past. My wife and I have gone on 25 + cruises over 43 years. As time has gone on, we have wanted more of our Cruising Experience. We started with the most inexpensive inside cabin during our honeymoon 43 years ago. Five years ago, we found the NCL Haven and loved it.

There are also the staple specialty dining restaurants including Le Bistro, La Cucina, Los Lobos, Teppanyaki, Sushi, Cagney’s & Moderno. The bright multi-deck atrium, complete with a large circular skylight at the top, is the hub of the ship and features three decks of shopping, lounging and learning about your cruise. Four inward-facing glass elevators make for great views of the action below. A midsized ship with less than 2,000 passengers (double occupancy), Norwegian Sun is big enough to offer plenty of onboard amenities and space, yet small enough to not feel overwhelming. Known for its "freestyle" cruising, the laid-back Norwegian experience is all about choice, offering one of the largest selections of dining and entertainment venues per ship. Plus, with Norwegian's Free At Sea offer, every cruise fare includes a choice of things like free Wi-Fi, specialty dining, drinks or excursions.
The highlight of evening entertainment on Norwegian Breakaway is “Six”, an acclaimed Broadway show with excellent performers. “Burn the Floor” and “Velvet” don’t disappoint either. Norwegian Breakaway restaurants are spread over multiple decks, allowing for easy access to food from all corners of the ship. And for those who wish to enjoy their meals in the privacy of their cabin, room service is available around the clock for a flat rate. As with all Norwegian ships, passengers enjoy the casual onboard ambience, so you'll find plenty of fun, relaxed cruise mates, many who are loyal to the line and have sailed multiple times. Ocean lovers will appreciate the amount of sea blues and wave-like design elements around the ship, from the atrium, various lounges and restaurants to staterooms and the spa.
Full Review: NCL Breakaway, December 4, 2022--A Detailed Review from Experienced Long-Term Cruisers by SthrnGary
While it’s an older ship from 2002, it was refurbished in 2016 and the modernization was extremely well done! On the flip side, Breakaway is also not a ship for those who prefer cruise traditions. The only old-school elements are singles gatherings, the small Norwegian Breakaway library (best to bring your own books) and mainstream ports. There's little true enrichment, and it can be hard to mingle with other passengers unless you’re staying in the Studio section, which features a private lounge for solo travelers. People complaining about NCL's prices need to check out the outrage on the Royal board about how crazy pricing has gotten.
The staff is outstanding, always keeping the space spotless and supplied. I will definitely book a spa pass next time I cruise this ship. Years ago, these cabins on smaller ships were called Mini-Suites, and they had a curtain you could use to separate the beds from the couch area. Nice for when someone wants to sleep and the other wants to stay up reading. If you didn’t know already, the walls are magnetic, and I brought magnetized hooks to put on the walls.
Paying for it, however, doesn’t seem like a great value. See the Teppanyaki Menu As for the sushi, it’s generally good, but being a sushi snob, it’s tough for me to pay real money for cruise ship sushi these days. If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll find that the Dawn is a decent choice for families. Even though a kids club exists, there aren’t many kid-friendly spaces on the ship like there are on newer larger cruise ships.
At full capacity, the ship can hold 5,218 passengers, most of whom are from the United States. You'll find yourself sharing the ship primarily with couples and groups of friends, with families and little ones dominant during the holidays and summer breaks. For more details about cabins, dining and things to do, see the separate sections of this review.
The fact was, the ship docked at every port and the person who said that was incorrect. We are on this same cruise in April- and two were initially listed that way, but our booking confirmation states "docked"- just curious what you did. Mandara on Norwegian Cruise Lines is one of the biggest offenders, even though it’s pretty typical across all cruise line spas now. For this reason, I refuse to pay for a spa treatment from a Mandara-branded spa on NCL. But if you’re inclined to have a treatment, they offer everything from unique massage experiences to simple hair cuts.
